Best Friends Bill of Rights

We may not be your spouse, lover, or just the person to whom you have taken offense; don't treat us as such, even if you are mad.   We don't deserve such abuse.   Nor lack of trust.

Please don't take us for granted. We're here because we want to be, not because we must.

We deserve smiles, the same as any other lover.   We are lovers, otherwise how would we put up with each other? We're not part of a conspiracy against you.   Never take offense just because we don't immediately say the things you need or want to hear.   We're not mind readers.

Don't expect lies, just the hard cold truth as you have let us see it.   If you don't let us in ...   Lies are not between "best friends".   We will try to help soften the blows of life, but we can't prevent them.   We are not God.   But we can't help if not asked.

"Best friends" is a two-way street: call upon us; don't wait on us and then get mad when we don't call.   You have the right as well as the obligation to call us.   Friendship withers when not tended.

Never lie to us for our own good, that's a break in the trust.   You don't know our needs anymore than we know yours until you express it.   We're here to hear the things you need to say.

Never just assume we need a break from you, we may need you; and like you be unable or afraid to request the help.
